Opto-Mechanical Engineer
Pleasanton, CA, US, CA

About the Role
Bright Silicon Technologies (BST) is replacing vulnerable RF links and bulky mechanical gimbals with solid-state optical solutions. We are defining a new era in lasercoms, going from single-point static links to multi-point agile networks. Our flagship product, OCTANE (Optical Communication Terminal for Advanced NEtworking), is an un-jammable, RF-silent free-space optical terminal delivering secure, high-bandwidth data transport across airborne platforms and ground vehicles and stations, enabling dense mesh networks on high-mobility platforms. We’re looking for a mechanical engineer who combines precision optomechanical design experience with a hands-on approach to building and integrating optical systems. You’ll own key optomechanical assemblies within the terminal, select optical components, and design robust mounting systems for a range of operating environments. This is an opportunity to help deploy the next generation of optical MEMS technology.
What you’ll do
- Own the design and development of precision optomechanical mounts and assemblies for the OCTANE terminal.
- Model thermal behavior and its effects on optical alignment to develop designs with predictable, repeatable performance across operating conditions.
- Select and source optical components in collaboration with the optical team and suppliers to meet system performance and environmental requirements.
- Apply design-for-manufacturability principles and perform tolerance stack-up analyses for precision optomechanical assemblies.
- Build, align, test, and refine optomechanical assemblies, using measured results to improve optical performance and robustness for field operation.
- Integrate custom optomechanical assemblies into the communications terminal and troubleshoot issues at subsystem interfaces.
- Collaborate with optical, mechanical, electronics, software, production, and product teams to translate system requirements into subsystem designs and deliver integrated optical systems.
- Prepare engineering drawings, assembly and alignment procedures, and technical documentation for internal use and external release.
What we’re looking for
- A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optomechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- At least three years of relevant experience. Industry work and substantial research experience both count.
- Experience designing precision optomechanical systems and mechanisms that require accurate, stable alignment.
- Familiarity with optical terminology, components and coatings, alignment methods, and free-space optical architectures.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software for mechanical design; SolidWorks preferred.
- A proactive approach to identifying technical risks, managing dependencies, and taking ownership of engineering problems.
- A systems perspective and the attention to detail needed to resolve precision design and integration challenges.
- U.S. Person status (U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual), as the role involves CUI and ITAR material.
Nice to have
- A master’s or doctoral degree in a related field.
- Experience designing, building, and validating custom optomechanical assemblies for demanding operating environments.
- Familiarity with aerospace design practices and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Experience with optical modeling software; Zemax preferred.
- Experience performing thermal and structural analyses of precision optomechanical systems.
- Programming experience with MATLAB, C, Python, or similar tools for engineering analysis or test automation.
Why BST
- Own the precision design and hands-on integration that turn optical hardware into a reliable communications system.
- Collaborate with a small team whose work spans precision mechanisms, MEMS, optics, electronics, and software. Bring your expertise and build depth in neighboring disciplines.
- Take meaningful technical ownership in an engineer-led company with competitive compensation, equity, and a sustainable approach to work.
